10th AFRICAN NATIONS’ CUP (CAN 2009) CAIRO - EGYPT : 8 – 15 NOVEMBER 2009

Egypt hosted the 10th edition of the African Nations’ Cup – CAN 2009. The event took place in Cairo at “Smash Tennis Academy” which has organized that edition in conjunction with the Egyptian Tennis
Federation registering the participation of 8 African nations: Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Democratic Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia.

In the Men’s Team event, the Moroccan Team composed by Reda El Amrani, Rabii Chaki and Yassine Idembarek won the Title for the 3rd consecutive year following the victory at the final against the Tunisian Team composed by the excellent Malek Jaziri, Heithem Abid and Ahmed Triki by two victories to zero. Reda El Amrani defeated Malek Jaziri by 62 64 and Rabii Chaki defeated Heithem Abid also in 2 sets by 63 76. The Teams of Morocco and Tunisia have previously deafeated in the semi- final successively the Egyptian and Ghanaian Teams by two victories to zero. In the Women’s Team event, the Tunisian team composed by the young and talented African players, Ons Jabeur (15 years), Nour Abbes (16 years) and Sonia Daggou (16 years), has triumphed in final against the Moroccan team composed by Fatima Zahra El Alami, Nadia Lalami and Lina Bennani by two victories to zero. Nour Abbes defeated on the 1st match Nadia Lalami in 2 sets 64 61 and Ons Jabeur got her revenge on Fatima Zahra El Alami also in 2 sets 63 75. The Tunisian and Moroccan Teams have previously defeated in the semi- final respectively the Egyptian and Cameroon Teams by two victories to zero.

At the individual event, in Men’s Single, Tunisian Malek Jaziri, revelation of this CAN has achieved the title when he defeated in the Final his compatriot Heithem Abid by two sets to one after 3 hours & 30 minutes 61 67 62; the 3rd place returned to Moroccan Reda El Amrani after his victory against his compatriot Rabii Chaki by 75 75. In the Women’s Single, the title returned to MoroccanFatima Zahra El Alami, after her success against Tunisian Ons Jabeur by 60 63, the 3rd place went back to Nadia Lalami (MAR) when she defeated her compatriot Lina Bennani 61 76.

In the Men’s Doubles, the Moroccan pair composed by Reda El Amrani & Rabii Chaki won the title against the Tunisian pair composed by Malek Jaziri & Heithem Abid after a very close match 64 75, in the Women’s Doubles, the Moroccan pair composed by Fatima Zhara El Allami & Nadia Lalami won the title after their victory against Egyptians Ola Abou Zekri & Rana Sherif 61 63.

We note finally that the 10th edition of the CAN was well organized by the Egyptian Tennis Federation and the “Smash Tennis Academy” and was honoured by the attendance of Mr. Tarak Cherif, CAT President and all members of the CAT Executive Committee which held its meeting in Cairo on the 14th of November 2009 and decided the organisation of the 11th edition of the African Nations’ Cup – CAN 2010 in Tripoli - Libya on November 2010.
