Kenya's Angela Okutoyi and Kael Shah made history at the 2025 FISU World University Games in Essen, Germany, by winning the silver medal in mixed doubles tennis. This is a first for Kenyan tennis at the event and a strong sign of progress for university-level sport in the country.
Okutoyi and Shah had a strong run throughout the tournament. They started by beating the Kazakhstan pair Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Iliyas Kaz Maratuly 7-5, 6-2 in the first round. In the second round, they outplayed the French team Alice Robbe and William Jucha 6-3, 6-1. In the quarterfinal, they came back from a set down to defeat Australia’s Catherine Aulia and Jeremy Jin 1-6, 6-1, [10-5].
In the semifinals, the Kenyan pair overcame the No. 4 seeds from Portugal, Maria De Liborio Garcia and Pedro Araújo, in straight sets 7-6(6), 6-3. In the final, they faced Japan’s Natsuki Yoshimoto and Jay Dylan Hara Friend and lost 6-3, 6-3.
Their silver medal is one of the best results ever for Kenya in international tennis. Congratulations to both players and to Tennis Kenya for this remarkable achievement.
