First African School Games 2025: Tunisia and Algeria Stand Out in Tennis Competition

The tennis event of the first-ever African School Games was held from 31 July to 4 August 2025 at the Tennis Club of Bachdjarah in Algiers with a total of 44 players including 21 girls. In addition to host country Algeria, 14 nations participated in this continental gathering: Benin, Botswana, Zambia, Comoros, DR Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Mauritania, Sudan, Tunisia, and Uganda.

In the boys’ singles, Tunisia’s Mahmoud Chetouane captured the gold medal, overcoming Algeria’s Kamyl Chebboub 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Chebboub had to settle for silver, while the bronze medal went to Algeria’s Yacine Meghari, who defeated his compatriot Fares Belamiri 6-3, 6-2 in the third-place match.

Chetouane added a second gold to his name in the boys’ doubles, teaming up with fellow Tunisian M. Aziz Messaoui to beat Algeria’s Chebboub and Meghari 6-4, 6-3 in the final. The bronze medal was claimed by the Algerian duo Ghaouli Nacer and Fares Belamiri, who overcame the DR Congo pair Engunga Escartin Eric and Sabwe Kumase Loic 6-3, 6-4.

Tunisia’s dominance continued in the girls’ singles with an all-Tunisian final. Lamiss Haouas secured the gold medal after her compatriot Nadine Hamrouni was forced to retire during the final at 1-0 for Lamiss. Algeria’s Houda Benamar took home the bronze following the withdrawal of her opponent, fellow Algerian Kawther Abidat. Houda was leading 7-5, 3-0 at the time of retirement.

Haouas and Hamrouni secured their second titles of the event by winning the girls’ doubles final 6-4, 6-1 against Algerians Benamar and Abidat, who earned silver. The Algerian pair Lydia Arezki and Nora Iachouren claimed the bronze medal after defeating Kenya’s Nnacy Kawira Peter and Seline Ahoya 6-2, 6-2.

With these results, Tunisia topped the tennis medal table with four gold medals and one silver. Algeria followed with three silver and four bronze medals.
