Proud Performances from Egypt in Boys’ Event and Tunisia in Girls’ Event
Africa Secures Two Spots in Both Draws for the 2026 Finals
From 4 to 9 August, Prostejov in Czechia hosted the 2025 ITF World Junior Tennis Finals, with Africa proudly represented by Egypt in the boys’ competition and Tunisia in the girls’ event. Both teams battled against the world’s best, delivering spirited performances that earned Egypt 10th place and Tunisia 12th, results that guarantee Africa an extra spot in each draw for the 2026 edition.
In the boys’ competition, Egypt was drawn in Group 1 alongside South Korea, Spain and Austria, finishing third in the group. Their opening match against South Korea ended in a 2-1 defeat. Abdelatif Mostafa lost the first singles 3-6, 3-6 to Siyun Kim before Mohamed Genidy equalised with an intense 7-5, 7-6(3) win over Junseo Jang. The decisive doubles saw Genidy and Ramez Michel fall 3-6, 1-6 to Jang and Kim. The second group match brought another 2-1 loss, this time to Spain. Michel lost 1-6, 3-6 to Stefan Shanglchev, but Genidy once again levelled the tie, coming back from a set down to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The doubles went to Spain, with Garfia and Shanglchev winning 6-4, 6-3. Egypt then earned their first group-stage victory by defeating Austria 2-1. Genidy claimed the second singles 6-2, 6-0 against Jakob Mittermayr before partnering Michel to win the doubles 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 against Leitner and Mittermayr.
In the 9th to 16th place playoffs, Egypt started strongly with a 2-1 win over Brazil. Mostafa beat Henrique Perrone Custodio 1-6, 6-1, 10-5 and Genidy followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Miguel Ferraz, before Brazil took the doubles 5-4, 4-2. Egypt then defeated Kazakhstan 2-1, with Mostafa winning 2-6, 6-1, 10-3 against Khaknazar Zhetkerbay and Genidy securing another singles victory 6-2, 4-1 against Akhmadi Makhanov. The doubles went to Kazakhstan 4-1, 4-1. The playoff for ninth place saw Egypt lose 2-1 to Canada. Mostafa fell 2-6, 2-6 to Deniz Karabulut, but Genidy extended his remarkable singles run with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Alden Yu. The doubles was decided in favour of the Canadians, with Karabulut and Ilya winning 6-3, 6-4. With this result, Egypt concluded their campaign in 10th position, an excellent showing that guarantees Africa a second boys’ team in the 2026 finals. Genidy’s impressive unbeaten singles record was one of the tournament’s standout performances, underlining his pivotal role in Egypt’s success.
In the girls’ competition, Tunisia was placed in Group 3 with Canada, Austria and Belgium. Their first match ended in a 3-0 defeat to Canada. Selima Bendhia lost 1-6, 2-6 to Tessa Puente, Malek Gamaoun fell 0-6, 3-6 to Isabella Ruyu Yan, and the doubles was won by Puente and Yan 6-3, 6-3. Tunisia’s second match was a close 2-1 loss to Austria. Bendhia recorded the first Tunisian win of the competition with a 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-4 victory over Marie Schmidhofer. Gamaoun then lost 5-7, 4-6 to Julia Ehrenberger before the doubles went to Austria 6-0, 6-0. Tunisia’s final group match brought their first team victory, a 2-1 win over Belgium. Bendhia defeated Fin Gybels 1-6, 6-0, 6-0 and Gamaoun overcame Noor Ceulemans 6-1, 6-2. Belgium took the doubles 6-1, 6-3.
In the playoffs for 9th to 16th place, Tunisia opened with a 2-1 win over Brazil. Saba Sahbani claimed the first point with a 6-3, 6-3 win, Gamaoun lost 3-6, 6-7 to Eduarda Gomes, but the decisive doubles saw Bendhia and Sahbani prevail 6-1, 6-3. Tunisia then lost 3-0 to Romania, with Bendhia falling 2-6, 1-6 to Natalia Maria Dicu, Gamaoun losing 0-6, 2-6 to Eva Maria Bulai, and the doubles going to Romania 2-4, 4-2, 11-9. Their final match was a 3-0 defeat to Japan, with Tunisia ending their campaign in 12th place and, like Egypt, securing a second African spot in next year’s event. However, the World titles went to France in the boys’ competition and the USA in the girls’.
