The 6th Edition of the African Junior Teams' Competition for 12 & Under, organized by the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) in collaboration with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Botswana Tennis Association, concluded successfully in Gaborone, Botswana. The competition, held from 6 to 13 October 2024, brought together the best 12&U players from across Africa, with 9 boys’ teams and 9 girls’ teams participating.
Participating Teams:
Boys: Botswana, Tunisia, South Africa, Zimbabw, Uganda, Kenya, Guinea, Ghana, Cameroon.
Girls: Botswana, Tunisia, South Africa, Madagascar, Kenya, Uganda, Guinea, Benin, Cameroon.
In the boys competition, Ghana dominated their opponents in Pool A, securing three important wins, 2-1 over Tunisia, 2-1 over Zimbabwe, and 3-0 against Botswana, propelling them to the top of the group. Tunisia, with two victories over Zimbabwe and Botswana with the same scores 3-0, finished second and joined Ghana in the semifinals. Zimbabwe took third place with a 2-1 victory over Botswana, who finished fourth.
In Pool B, South Africa won all four of their matches with 3-0 scores against Uganda, Kenya, Cameroon, and Guinea, earning the pole position. Cameroon followed closely in second place after defeating Uganda, Kenya, and Guinea, all by 3-0. Guinea placed third with two 2-1 wins over Kenya and Uganda, while Uganda secured fourth place by beating Kenya 2-1 who finished in the fifth position.
In the semifinals, Ghana overcame Cameroon 2-1, and South Africa edged Tunisia with the same scoreline to set up a thrilling final. Then Ghana claimed the boys' title after defeating South Africa 2-1 in the final.
In the ranking matches, Tunisia secured third place by defeating Cameroon 2-1, while Zimbabwe finished fifth after a 2-1 victory over Guinea. Botswana clinched seventh place by beating Uganda 2-0, and Kenya ended the tournament in ninth position.
In the girls’ event, Tunisia topped the standings with three wins in Group A, including a 3-0 win over Kenya and Botswana and a 2-1 victory over Cameroon. Cameroon finished second after wins against Kenya 3-0 and Botswana 2-1. Botswana placed third after overcoming Kenya 2-1 who finished fourth of the group. Tunisia and Cameroon advanced to the semifinals.
In Group B, South Africa dominated their pool, winning all their matches 3-0 against Madagascar, Benin, Uganda, and Guinea. Benin secured second place after defeating Madagascar, Uganda, and Guinea, all by 3-0 scores. Madagascar finished third with two 3-0 wins over Uganda and Guinea. Guinea placed fourth with a 2-1 victory over Uganda, who ended up in fifth place.
The semifinals saw Tunisia overcome Benin 2-1, while South Africa secured their spot in the final by defeating Cameroon 2-0. South Africa went on to claim the title with a 2-0 win over Tunisia in the final.
In the rankings, Benin took the bronze after a 2-1 victory over Cameroon. Botswana finished fifth, defeating Madagascar 2-1, while Kenya earned seventh place by beating Guinea 3-0. Uganda completed the tournament in ninth place.
